Injectable Fillers

Question: The other day I was getting my hair done at the salon when I saw an ad for Botox injections. I thought that only a certified medical provider could do them; what's the deal?

Answer: Every state has its own unique laws and regulations about Botox injections. I would check with your local medical board about the issue. Remember to always have your botox injected by a trained/experienced injector. It is still a medical procedure.

Question: Can injectable fillers be performed at the same time as a facelift or do you need to wait? If you need to wait, how long? And is this true of all fillers?

Answer: It depends where on the face you want to have it injected. I often inject fillers for the smile lines and lips during a facelift procedure. Patients like this since they don't feel the needle at all under anesthesia.

Question: I am a 52-year-old woman with heavy skin damage due to the sun and smoking. Would a series of injectable fillers do anything for me or should I be looking into surgical options?

Answer: Injectable fillers are used to correct resting lines or lines that are not due to facial motion. The most common places for injectable fillers are smile lines and marionette lines. Skin damage due to sun and smoking will probably better respond with chemical peels and/or laser to resurface the skin. After that surgery can be performed to address sagging skin and muscle.

Question: What type of injectable filler is the longest lasting for filling out the wrinkles in the forehead? What, if any, complications are associated with injections of this particular filler?

Answer: I would use Botox for forehead lines. These lines are due to activity of the forehead muscles and would benefit from relaxing them. The forehead skin tends to be thicker than other parts of the face and will not work as well.

Question: For the past thirty years I have been a two pack a day smoker. Because of this I have very deep wrinkles all over my face that make me look ten years older. Would you recommend a facial filler to help correct this problem?

Answer: A long time smokers often have a poor skin texture, tone, and deep rhytids (wrinkles/lines). Fillers would definitely help with certain facial lines by adding volume. Sometimes a laser procedure or chemical peel (moderate to deep) will also significantly improve your face.

Question: After I get injectable fillers in my face, how should I take care of this area afterwards? Do I use antibiotic creams or any special lotions? Do you provide these or do I have to buy them?

Answer: There is really no need to for any aftercare for filler injections. A temporary use of cold packs may help to prevent bruising and swelling.
