Question: I am male from Chesapeake, Virginia with very thin lips. I would like Perlane to fill in the lips somewhat, but definitely not overfill. The pouty look is not what I am after. Is Perlane safer than collagen injections?
Answer: Perlane is very safe. It is one of the more common fillers on the market for lip augmentation. The pouty look is not necessarily from the material but injection technique error. Over filling the vermillion border causes this look and can be easily avoided. Unfortunately, many providers have learned only one way to augment the lip which often causes the pouty look.
Question: I have an uneven upper lip line that’s gotten worse with age. Would injectable fillers make it look more even?
Question: A friend of mine got Botox injections and she looks awful. The sides of her eyebrows are raised unnaturally high, sort of like the Joker from Batman. Why would this happen and how do you avoid it?
Answer: There is a lot of misunderstanding about brow elevation with Botox. Patients need to understand that the immediate area where Botox is injected will not elevate. In fact, it may slightly depress. The elevation of brow that comes from Botox use has to do with compensatory lifting done by forehead muscles that are not injected with Botox. You avoid this by not leaving too much area in the outer part of the forehead unbotoxed.
Question: Botox seems the way to go for me. I have lots of little wrinkles around my eyes and mouth. How do I find out if this is the right approach without coming into the office?
Answer: Motion related lines work well with botox. One of the easiest ways to see if botox is right for types of lines on your face is to try the Treatment Visualizer. This is a program where you can upload your face photo and see how botox can help.
Question: I know Botox can be used for frown lines, but can it be used for anything else or any other wrinkles?
Answer: Botox can be used to treat a condition called hyperhydrosis or excessive sweating. Botox is very effective in keeping your underarms dry for up to 6 months. The procedure takes less than 10 minutes in the office. Botox is also used for TMJ, migraine headaches, jaw clinching and massester hypertrophy (wide jaw appearance due to thick muscle). There are other medical uses for botox as well.
Question: Does Juvederm work for people of all skin tones?
Answer: Yes. Juvederm is injected into a skin layer called the dermis to help correct static facial lines such as smile limes and marionette lines. It is also very popular in lips for augmentation. It is safe for all skin types. Dr. Choe personally injects all of his patients. The procedure takes less than 10 minutes and has no down time.
I have two vertical creases on my forehead that begin at my nose. Are these what are called frown lines? I am not much of a frowner so I don't know why I have them. What injectable filler would you use to decrease these creases? Are there some fillers that are longer lasting than others?
Yes. The vertical lines are usually due to repetitive frowning action. Two muscles are primarily responsible for the lines and therefore, it would be better to use Botox rather than filler. I advise my patients to try the botox first and after a week or two, if lines persist then fill it with one of the fillers (Juvederm or Restylane).
I've heard that injectables can be used as non-surgical versions of certain procedures, like a facelift, eyelid lift, nose job, etc. How effective are these?
How often do injectable fillers need to be replaced?
Most injectable fillers are temporary. There are some permanent injectables such as silicone but not FDA approved for cosmetic use. Hyaluronic acid type injectables (Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane) usually last 6-9 months. Radiesse, which is a calcium, based filler lasts up to 14 months.
What type of injectable filler is the longest lasting for diminishing forehead wrinkles? Does this filler have any complications associated with it?
I do not advocate fillers for forehead lines. Botox is a better option in the upper 1/3 of the face as these lines are associated more with motion/animation of the face. The forehead skin is relatively thick and fillers only help minimally for these lines.
