Skin Care & Non Surgical

Last year my girlfriend had a chemical peel and the results looked amazing. Now I’m considering getting one for myself to fix some of my skin issues. Does this procedure help with both sun damage and acne scars?

Chemical peel is a general term used to describe a procedure where a medical professional applies a thin layer of (usually an acid) to the face/neck/chest. Chemical peels come in variety of different types and concentrations but can be divided into categories of superficial, medium, or deep peel. Most estheticians and nurses apply superficial type while medical doctor applies medium to deep peels. I believe chemical peels are a great choice for improving sun damaged spots but they do not work well for acne scars.  They just do not go down deep enough into the skin layer to make an appreciable difference. Dermabrasion or laser will work better for acne scars.

what can I do to improve the look of my skin after the summer?

Despite daily use of sun screens, after a long summer your skin will have gone through some changes and visible signs of damage such as brown spots, broken capillaries and uneven skin tone and texture. There are few options to improve the look and feel of your skin. First, a non-surigcal skin care products (medical grade always) that decrease the melanin production and help to exfoliate your skin will help the look of your skin without any downtime. Second, light to deep chemical peels can be beneficial. Series of light peels such as glycolic acid to more potent 35% TCA (trichloric acid) peels can definitely remove most of your visible spots less broke capillaries. Lastly, LASER in combination with IPL (intense pulse light) can make a big difference. A laser such as the 2790nm laser only removes the outer layer of skin with only 4-5 days of down time is an excellent choice for many active and busy patients. More to follow next week on different types of peels and lasers.

Many patients who are interested in rhinoplasty (nose job surgery) are often anxious and scared. Some would like to change the shape of their nose without surgery. This can be sometimes achieved using fillers.

There are different types of fillers for your facial lines and wrinkles. The most common type is a hyaluronic acid type (HA) filler. These include fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane. They are similar but not identical. For example, Juvederm has a gel like consistency, which gives great results for lips and fine lines. I find that I can inject Juvederm much more superficially than Restylane or Perlane.  For smile lines, called nasolabial folds, Restylane and Perlane work just as well.

Many patients have a poor understanding of how and when botox or fillers should be used. The facial lines can be divided into either dynamic or resting lines. Dynamic lines are lines that can be seen when you animate or move your face. Examples of such lines are forehead lines, glabellar lines, and crow’s feet. Dynamic lines occur because the underlying muscle moves and contracts. Botox is used to relax these muscles by disrupting muscle-to-muscle communication. Resting lines are lines that can still be seen when your face is at rest.

Cold weather and decreased humidity in the air brings dry and chapped skin to the face and body. Dry skin results when oil that is naturally present in the skin is lost allowing water to escape. What should you do for your dry and unhealthy looking winter skin?
