Botox Injection Treatments for TMJ, Jaw Clinching, and Masseter Hypertrophy (Wide Appearing Jaw) Virginia Beach VA

Virginia Beach, Virginia BOTOX®

At the Choe Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Virginia Beach, Virginia, many patients seek Botox® injections for wrinkle reduction. Though less common, Botox® may also be used for the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), jaw clinching, and masseter hypertrophy (wide appearing jaw).

Many individuals develop a bad habit of clinching their teeth or grinding their teeth at night. For some, this habit can lead to painful headaches or even widening of the jaw due to hypertrophy or thickening of the jaw muscles. For these individuals, Botox® can help.

Botox® Injection & Recovery

Botox® injection for TMJ, jaw clinching and a wide appearing jaw due to muscle hypertrophy is a simple, non-surgical procedure performed in the office setting at the Choe Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The treatment takes approximately ten to twenty minutes to complete. During the procedure, Dr. Choe will have you contract certain muscles in your head and neck area and then inject small amounts of Botox® into the appropriate muscles. The injections are mainly in the masseter, temporalis and frontalis muscles.

There is little recovery or downtime associated with Botox® injections for TMJ, jaw clinching and a masseter hypertrophy, and patients are able to immediately return to work and most other activities. Side effects are generally rare but may include temporary bruising at the injection site, headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Some patients may develop antibodies that would render the treatment less effective over time, though this resistance can be delayed by using the lowest effective dose possible over the longest intervals of time. Botox® treatments should not be performed on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dr. Kyle Choe is a facial plastic surgeon board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Patients from Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, Newport News and Hampton travel to see Dr. Choe every day for Botox® and he personally performs all Botox® injections himself. Botox® for TMJ, jaw clinching and a wide appearing jaw due to muscle hypertrophy is an effective treatment method.
