Chemical Peel

Question: If I had a chemical peel on my face and upper chest, how long do the rejuvenating effects last? Is the skin reddened afterwards and for how long?

Answer: It depends on the type and depth of penetration. Please read my previous discussion on peels. You can expect a longer recovery period with prolonged redness with deeper penetrating peels. These often provide more-longer lasting results. For very superficial peels, the recovery is none or very short.

What is the down time for the deepest chemical peel that you offer? Does the face actually peel off like a sunburn peels? Is there pain associated with this treatment?

There are several different types of chemical peels depending on the depth of penetration. At the Choe Center, we offer the entire spectrum of peels from superficial to deep. The deeper the peel, a more downtime is associated with it. The treated skin will gently peel off in 5-7 days. There is only minimal discomfort during the recovery phase.

I would like a chemical peel but really know very little about them. I have fine wrinkles around my eyes and now my mouth. How much skin is removed with the peel? How long must I stay home afterward?

One of the more common chemical peels is TCA peel. It is a safe and effective method to improve fine lines around the eyes (depending on your skin type). The procedure takes 15 minutes. Your skin will turn brown before it peels off usually with in 4-7 days. I would not recommend chemical peels for vertical lines around your mouth. These are deeper and much more motion related. A better option would be dermabrasion or LASER.

I've lived in California all of my life, and now that I'm in my 50's my skin is showing signs of sun damage. Is a chemical peel my best option for lessening these effects?

For photo damaged skin, chemical peel, IPL, and lasers are three very good options. Depending on your skin type and severity of the damage, we can customize the treatment options. Some patient may benefit from a combination of treatments.
