Question: If I had a chemical peel on my face and upper chest, how long do the rejuvenating effects last? Is the skin reddened afterwards and for how long?

Answer: It depends on the type and depth of penetration. Please read my previous discussion on peels. You can expect a longer recovery period with prolonged redness with deeper penetrating peels. These often provide more-longer lasting results. For very superficial peels, the recovery is none or very short.

Question: I recently saw on TV that Kim Kardashian had a terrible allergic reaction to her Botox injection. Her eye was inflamed and turned black and blue. Is this normal?

Answer: That is not a common response to botox injections. Botox has been in use for many years and has a very good safety record. There are risks such as bruising, headache, and flu like symptoms. Most patients do very well without any complications.

Question: All celebrities these days are ranting and raving about their Botox injections. How will Botox make me look younger?

Answer: Botox works well for motion related or dynamic facial lines. The most common areas on the face for botox injections are between the brows (frown lines), forehead (horizontal lines) and outside of the eyes (crow’s feet) lines. It may make you look younger by helping you to have less facial lines when in motion.

Many patients who are interested in rhinoplasty (nose job surgery) are often anxious and scared. Some would like to change the shape of their nose without surgery. This can be sometimes achieved using fillers.

There are different types of fillers for your facial lines and wrinkles. The most common type is a hyaluronic acid type (HA) filler. These include fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane. They are similar but not identical. For example, Juvederm has a gel like consistency, which gives great results for lips and fine lines. I find that I can inject Juvederm much more superficially than Restylane or Perlane.  For smile lines, called nasolabial folds, Restylane and Perlane work just as well.

Many patients have a poor understanding of how and when botox or fillers should be used. The facial lines can be divided into either dynamic or resting lines. Dynamic lines are lines that can be seen when you animate or move your face. Examples of such lines are forehead lines, glabellar lines, and crow’s feet. Dynamic lines occur because the underlying muscle moves and contracts. Botox is used to relax these muscles by disrupting muscle-to-muscle communication. Resting lines are lines that can still be seen when your face is at rest.
