Choosing your Facial Plastic Surgeon
Kyle S. Choe, MD Facial Plastic Surgeon, Virginia Beach, VA
An educated patient is the most qualified person to select a surgeon that is right for them.
  1. Check out to see if the surgeon is Board Certified in the body area you're considering having improved.
  2. Get names from friends, your family doctor, satisfied patients - but check out the names YOURSELF. You may be given the name of a good surgeon, only to find out there is someone more skilled and qualified. Interview two or three surgeons to make comparisons.
  3. See if there are any complimentary consultations with office staff or complimentary seminars you can attend. You can learn about the surgeon and his work without pressure.
  4. Look at Before & After photos of the surgeon's work. Do you like what you see?
  5. Ask to talk to the doctor's patients who had procedures similar to the one's you are interested in to see what their experience was like.
  6. Research Procedure Information about specific procedures your interested in.
  7. Prepare for consultation by making a written list of questions ahead of time.

Notice that steps 1-7 are all before your consultation with the doctor! This way you go to the consultation educated and in control!
  8. At Your Consultation, is the surgeon able to answer your questions to your satisfaction? Does he give his opinion about which procedures would achieve the results that you want? If you have a big nose, does he show you before and after photos of other patients with big noses? Are options discussed? Is a written quote provided for any and all fees?
  9. Does the consultation include computer imaging? In comparing your photo with the image created, does the result look reasonable to you? Does the surgeon go over limitations - what can and cannot be achieved - and realistic expectations?
  10. Check out both the surgeon and staff's communication skills. Surgeon's communication skills - does the surgeon listen to and understand you? Staff's communication skills - in order to talk to the doctor, you will first be talking to the staff. Are they courteous, knowledgeable and helpful?

You are the most qualified person to select a surgeon that is right for you!
