Ear Reshaping is very commonly done today to correct the problem of protruding ears. Children who are born with this problem often endure harmful teasing from their peers – and even adults. Otoplasty (ear pinning) surgery safely and effectively eliminates this distressing situation and can be done on a child as young as seven years old. However there is no upper age limit. Reshaping the ears brings them into balance with the rest of the head and face – and when a person is happy with their appearance – their self-confidence and self-esteem levels usually improve also.
Otoplasty Surgery Overview:
After administering IV sedation and local anesthetic if needed, an incision is made behind the ear exposing the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then carefully shaped and sutures are used to maintain the new contour and position of the ear. A turban type bandage is wrapped around the head and will remain in place for a few days.

Will ear pinning change the way I look? No. Ear reshaping will not change who you are – your natural appearance. It will create symmetry – or a more balanced – pleasing appearance.
Is there much pain with ear Otoplasty surgery? No. There will be some discomfort which is easily managed with oral pain medication. This discomfort goes away quickly in a few days.
How long will the swelling and bruising last? The swelling and bruising diminished a little every day and you will notice much less within a week or two. The swelling will take a little longer to subside completely. Our patients are presentable to return to normal activity or work within 7-10 days. Many children do this procedure during their summer or winter school break.
How will I manage to sleep after my ear reshaping surgery? You will need to sleep on 2-3 pillows for 2-3 weeks after your surgery. You will be comfortable and sleep well if you take your pain medication as prescribed. When will I see the final results of my ear reshaping surgery? You will notice results right away – but the final results will become visible over a few months time.
Pre-Surgery Instructions for Ear Correction Surgery:
- Do not use aspirin, aspirin containing products, ibuprofen or herbal medicines for 2 weeks before your surgery.
- Do not use nicotine or nicotine products for 4 weeks prior to your surgery.
- Do not use alcohol for 1 week prior to your surgery.
- Take the Arnica and Vitamin C as directed before your surgery.
- You must have a responsible adult drive you to your surgery and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.
