Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure which uses fine diamond chips and gentle suction to remove the outermost layer of skin in order to produce a healthier, more youthful appearance. This procedure can improve damage caused by both sun and age, including fine lines and superficial wrinkles, crow’s feet, age spots, acne scars and other blemishes.
Microdermabrasion is a good procedure for patients with acne prone skin, blotchy skin resulting from sun damage, keratosis or thickened skin from environmental damage, black heads, and fine lines.
The Choe Center for Facial Plastic Surgery offers microdermabrasion procedures at their Virginia Beach, Virginia, location. Anesthesia is not required and procedure times average thirty to forty-five minutes. During the procedure, the face is gently cleansed and the DiamondTome microdermabrader is then applied to the skin to gently remove the outer most layer. The fine diamond chips provide a gentle abrasion of the skin and suction then removes the dead, outer layer.
The skin may feel slightly hot or flushed on the day of your treatment, however there is no downtime associated with microdermabrasion and patients are able to immediately return to their normal routine. Sun exposure should be avoided for at least one week. The skin will feel healthy, vibrant and smoother after treatment. For optimal results, a series of treatments is often recommended. Most of our patients elect to have microdermabrasion performed every four to six weeks, and many have a light peel performed at the same time.
Microdermabrasion is generally considered to be a safe procedure. Potential risks may include skin irritation, infection and hyperpigmentation. These risks are more likely to occur with medical-grade high-powered microdermabrasion.
