Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) in Chesapeake

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a cosmetic procedure that addresses sagging upper lids, under-eye bags, and puffiness by removing excess skin, fat, or muscles. In some cases, it can also improve vision if sagging skin interferes with eyesight.

The procedure takes one to two hours, depending on whether both upper and lower eyelids are treated.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery results can last up to 10 years, However, as you age, you may need additional touch-ups to enhance the results.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is ideal for anyone with visible signs of aging, such as sagging eyelids, puffiness, or under-eye bags. These changes can make you look tired, angry, or older than you feel. For some, excess upper eyelid skin may even interfere with vision.

The procedure is recommended for people who are over 35 years old. At this age, the skin usually begins to naturally lose elasticity. However, younger patients with genetically heavy eyelids or early signs of aging may also benefit from the procedure.

Candidates should also have good health and be free from eye conditions that could affect healing. If you do smoke or drink alcohol, Dr. Choe will ask you to quit at least two weeks before and after the procedure to reduce the risk of complications.

We often perform eyelid surgery under local anesthesia to correct mild to moderate signs of aging. But if you require more extensive contouring or have a significant amount of fat around the upper eyelids, we may recommend general anesthesia.

What to Expect During a Blepharoplasty Consultation?

Dr. Choe will review your medical history, including any eye conditions, previous surgeries, allergies, or medications that may affect your treatment plan.

He will also assess the amount of skin or fat on your eyelids, your brow position, and the elasticity of your skin. The physical exam helps us determine the best surgical approach.

Thereafter, you will review Dr. Choe’s Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Before & After Photos of previous patients, discuss recovery expectations, and receive a quote for your procedure.

What Happens During the Eyelid Surgery Procedure?

Dr. Choe will first draw markings on the natural crease where the incisions will be made. This ensures precision and symmetry during the procedure. He will then inject anesthesia to numb the eyelids and keep you comfortable.

Once the area is numbed, our eyelid surgeon will make incisions along the marked areas to remove or reposition fat deposits, trim excess skin, and tighten the underlying muscles as needed.

If you’re also having lower eyelid surgery, a separate incision is made either below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid. This allows us to remove excess fat and tighten loose skin to reduce puffiness and smooth under-eye hollows or bags. We will then close the incisions with fine sutures.

How Much Does a Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Cost?

Blepharoplasty cost in Chesapeake depends on the extent of the procedure. A simple, in-office procedure, where only excess skin is removed from the upper eyelids under local anesthesia, may start around $3,000. This option is ideal for patients with mild skin laxity and no need for fat removal or deeper correction.

If your procedure involves removing skin and fat or requires more detailed contouring of the upper or lower eyelids (or both), the cost can range from $5,000 to $10,000. These cases are often performed in an accredited surgical facility using general anesthesia.

What Is Recovery Like after an Eyelid Surgery?

Recovery depends on whether you are doing an upper eyelid surgery only or both an upper and lower eyelid surgery. Upper blepharoplasty surgery generally has a shorter and more comfortable recovery, while lower blepharoplasty surgery may result in slightly more swelling, tightness, and temporary blurry vision. For most patients, we’ll remove stitches 3–4 days after the blepharoplasty/eyelid surgery, and you can return to work in 7–10 days.
