Advantages of Botox

Botox’s main purpose is to help combat wrinkles using a purified solution of botulinum toxin A. When it’s used by a professional, there’s no risk of developing toxic side effects. The formula activates by relaxing muscles, which softens the face and reduces wrinkles in the area.

Not only can it smooth out facial wrinkles, but Botox also has been shown to relieve migraine headaches in chronically affected individuals. Doctors and patients both enjoy this bit of knowledge since Botox offers nearly no side effects unlike other types of pain medications, which have lists of possible problems associated with them.

Another surprising benefit to Botox comes in the form of treating hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating. This syndrome normally relies on prescribed antiperspirants that may not work for patients affected severely. Not only that, but these prescriptions don’t have clear long-term effects yet. On the other hand, this treatment provides relief for months at a time with a single treatment session.

The BOTOX® Injection Procedure

Dr. Choe’s technique involves small amounts of Botox Cosmetic in specific areas of the face. Almost no redness or swelling occurs following a injection. No anesthesia is required and the entire procedure takes no more than 10 minutes.

We advise no workouts for 4 hours after the treatment. The Botox injection will gradually take effect in three to five days. It is important that you keep your head elevated (e.g., do not lie down) for approximately four hours after a Botox Cosmetic injection. Patients frequently come in from nearby Chesapeake and Norfolk and are able to drive home immediately following their procedure.

Best Candidates for Botox

If you’re interested in getting Botox treatments, know that the best candidates are physically healthy, not pregnant, not nursing, at least 18 years old, and absent of neuromuscular disease.

You may not wish to have Botox if any of the following criteria apply to you:

  • Weakness in the target muscle
  • Very thick facial skin
  • Skin disorders in the target area
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Deep facial scars
  • Significant facial asymmetry

As with many types of treatments, how well this injection reduces wrinkles ultimately depends on the patient. Many will respond well, but some will naturally have better results than others. Occasionally, the patient may not see any improvement and will require two or more treatments to see desired results. Your doctor can discuss a realistic timeline.

Dr. Choe and his staff were wonderful. I had Botox for my TMJ (grinding your teeth) I’ve been suffering for years. I’m looking forward to being pain and headache free. Will definitely be going back!

Botox Frequently Asked Questions

A Botox injection takes minutes to complete using a single, thin needle. Because it provides only minor discomfort, patients don’t need anesthesia, which greatly reduces the appointment time.
The full effect may take up to two weeks to appear. For best results, avoid using anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin and alcohol for a week prior to the injection. Otherwise, you could develop plenty of bruising.
Each injection should last at least three months, but generally wear out by six months. As the muscle begins to regain its usual function, so too will the wrinkles and line show once again, which means further treatment would be required to regain the results. Over time, however, the wrinkles will appear less severe due to the shrinking muscles.
Most daily activities can be resumed right away, though you’ll need to keep a few things in mind: Do not lay down or exercise for 4 hours immediately after the injections, avoid rubbing or massaging the injection site, or else the Botox solution could move around the area, affecting beyond the intended site.
The most common possible effect is temporary bruising. Rarely, patients develop headaches in the first 48 hours. Some may also notice eye drooping in the first three weeks while the toxin is moving around, which is why it is very important not to rub the injection site for 12 hours.
In most cases, you should be able to resume work immediately once the injection is complete. Because bruising is a potential side effect, however, you may wish to provide enough time to gauge whether or not covering up the bruise is necessary.
